His Love Part II
Legend has it that Wallace and his small band escaped out of the rear of the house, barring the door behind them to delay entry to the pursuing English. It could not have been foreseen that the English would vent their rage at Wallace’s escape on his innocent wife, who was thought by the band to be safely on her way to a pre-arranged rendezvous. Marion was caught and executed for no apparent crime other than for being Wallace’s wife, and her home burned to the ground around her.

These were troubled and volatile times and William Wallace and his friends had for some time been active in being as troublesome and obstructive to the occupying English as it had been possible to be. Accordingly, they had contingency plans covering most likely eventualities! For occasions such as this, involving unplanned flight, a series of meeting places had been pre-arranged. The group fleeing with Wallace, and all other locals of like mind, were now making their way to one of these the pre-arranged rendezvous – where they expected to meet up with Marion! There, they would regroup before heading south via the home of Marion’s parents at Lamington where they could leave Marion in safety before stealing into the Ettrick Forest.
