Dining out in Lanark
Underneath the watchful eye of William Wallace on his statue at the Cross is the Lanark’s “GourmetGate”! As fine a selection of top class restaurants as you are likely to find outside Edinburgh or Glasgow! So good in fact that citizens of these cosmopolitan hot spots frequently make the soothing drive up the Clyde Valley or over the Pentland Hills, to dine at leisure in Lanark.

Within throwing distance of William Wallace, the Ristorante La Vigna is an absolute must for the gourmet, as is the superb Brown’s Restaurant next door to it and the incomparable East India Company adjacent to Brown’s. Across the street is the newly opened China Bleu Restaurant, a relatively new venture – in Lanark, – which enhances the high standards already set by restaurants in the town’s narrow Wellgate – or “GourmetGate” as it is fondly known locally.

Less than 100 yards away at the Cross, opposite the exit from the Wellgate, is Prego’s. Prego’s is a small Italian Restaurant – noisy – cheerful – welcoming – and serving exquisite food! Is it any wonder that it is wise to book in advance? Most do book in advance for all of these superb restaurants of course, but many others are content to take ‘pot luck’ and meander through the Cross and Wellgate, secure in the knowledge that whichever of the town’s superb restaurants they finally choose, they are guaranteed an exquisite dining experience.
