The Wee Toon o’ Lanark

I’ve heard men talk of cities fair,
Of scenery beyond compare,
But there’s a place tae me mair fair,
The Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

Famed in stories far and wide,
The beauties of the falls of Clyde,
Where peace and plenty there abide,
In the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

In Cartland Crags and Cleghorn Woods,
Where nature’s aye in happy mood,
Where Bruce and Wallace oft hae stood,
Near the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

Or wander down by Kirfield braw,
The bonniest place amang them a’
Your heart can ne’er be far awa’
Frae the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

Where is the heart in Lanark born,
But puts tae flight dull care and scorn,
And swells wi’ pride on Lanimer Morn’,
In the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

Decked wi’ birks o’ bonnie green,
A smilin’ lass, a lovely queen,
The lovliest sight you’ve ever seen,
Is Lanimer Morn’ in Lanark.

Oh give me back the happy days,
Tae wander doon the dear Stey Braes,
Alang the Mouse tae pu’ the slaes,
Near the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

The Wee White hoose upon the hill,
In fancy I can see there still,
Ma heart’s there noo and ever will,
In the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

It nestles high upon a hill,
Above the skylarks sweetly trill,
The fairies seem tae roam at will,
Near the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.

So you can have your cities grand,
You never could quite understand,
Tae me there’s nae place in the land,
Like the Wee Toon o’ Lanark.
