Lanark Events - Lanimer Week

"Kirkin' of the Cornet" A 'Lord Cornet'- or Standard Bearer - is selected from among the citizenry each year to represent the burgh during all of our Lanimer Celebrations and at the March Ridings and ceremonies of other Scottish border towns. The official handover from the current cornet to the new cornet elect takes place after the Perambulation of the Marches on Monday night. The week starts however, with the burgh standard and both cornet and cornet elect being 'kirked' in St. Nicholas Kirk at the Cross on Sunday. Several hundred of the town citizenry, Provost and Councillors, members of the principal organisations and individuals gather in the town's Memorial Hall, greeting each other with the traditional "Happy Lanimers" before assembling in St. Leonard's Street for the pipe band led procession to St. Nicholas and the Kirkin' Ceremony. After this church service the parade re-assembles outside St. Nicholas and marches once more via Westport to the County Buildings in Hope Street where, after a short ceremony, it is disbanded.
